Category Deletion

It seems plain to me that 'construction' is/was not the same as the 'building' category you created. I base this on reading your description of the building category on its own page, plus the normal usage of the term 'construction', both in the construction industry and by us diyers & professionals outside of it.

This might have something to do with why I created it, along with the number of articles on aspects of construction we now have.

Do you believe we as moderators should delete all instances of any cat we dont personally approve of? If so, there are several more due for deletion.

Do you believe it is our duty to prevent contributors starting new categories?

Do you believe a wiki only has room for one person's view of the best categories, and that that view is yours?

Do you believe a diy wiki specifically needs to avoid having a construction category?

I am not understanding your action in any constructive way. If you want to tag an article with 'building' then great, but to remove a core diy wiki category does not appear to me to be a constructive action in any respect.

As moderators we must be careful. What ends participation on most forums is the moderators. We need to let contributors create the articles & categories they believe are useful, and restrict our editing to removing or correcting misinformation, improving on article format and so on. Going round undoing valid work is not going to help any.

Well OK roll back the changes I made if you think Construction is different from Building but please can you put something in the Construction category page to say what it's supposed to mean, as I did for the Building page:

"The category Building encompasses all aspects of constructing and maintaining the fabric of a building."

since I for one can't see the difference, let alone see why we need two separate categories.

Please note that I did not delete the Construction category: it just disappeared when there were no more articles in it.

If you do really want a Construction category would you object to recategorising the articles at present in Building into Construction instead?

Must admit I can't really see any distinction between construction and building. Personally I find a few broad categories more useful than lots of little ones with only a few articles each.

Maybe it would help some if we both tried to clarify the categories a bit more.

By construction I meant new build, ie new houses and new extensions, the latter being very much within diyer territory, and the former sometimes.

The building cat mentions 'all aspects of constructing and maintaining the fabric of a building' whereas construction does not include maintenance - and maintenance covers quite a bit, and is significantly different work to construction.

The reason I've never tagged many articles with 'building' is I'm very unclear as to the boundaries of the category.

I wouldnt want to stop you tagging things with suitable categories. I think the 2 may both have their place here, as those constructing an extension and those maintaining the fabric of an existing building will be looking at significantly different articles.

Maybe this at least clarifies to some degree. NT 12:48, 3 July 2007 (BST)

Well at least I now understand what you mean by the category Construction. However the words are practically synonymous:

Wikipedia

Building

the word building may refer to one of the following:

  1. Any man-made structure used or intended for supporting or sheltering any use or continuous occupancy, or
  2. An act of construction.

Construction

construction is the building or assembly of any infrastructure on a site or sites.
Wiktionary

building

Synonyms

   * (act or process of building): construction

construction

# A building, model or some other structure

(my emphases)

Could you give it a name that's more obvious e.g. maybe 'new-build'?

--John Stumbles 13:59, 3 July 2007 (BST)

New build would certainly work, I only picked construction because its the term in general use.

AIUI the difference so far between building and construction lies in the description on the building category page, which expands its scope significantly wider than just construction.

How do you feel about one cat for new build and one for maintenance of a building's structure, ie brickwork, stonework, roofing etc? NT 14:20, 3 July 2007 (BST)

All the above content moved from 'cement mixing' talk page 03/07/07. NT 14:31, 3 July 2007 (BST)

Categories Article

Created to do 2 things: 1. Give users at the contents page a link to all the article categories 2. Create a space specific to categories discussion. NT 14:31, 3 July 2007 (BST)

Perhaps having two cats then makes sense... one called "Building" or "Construction" and the other called "maintenance". I can see a clear distinction between "maintenance" and construction or building, but not between construction and building.
