There are a few effective ways to strip wallpaper

Steamer

  • Makes a wet mess

Wallwik sheets

  • Use your own sprayer with them
  • Wallwik supplier
  • Possible (untested) replacement for wallwik sheets: lining paper

Sprayer

  • Use warm water & detergent
  • Less messy.
  1. Spray a section
  2. Wait 15 minutes
  3. Respray the section
  4. Wait 15 minutes

The paper should come off easily.

Vinyl Papers

Vinyl faced papers don't let water penetrate easily.

Many are peelable, the front vinyl layer can be peeled off leaving paper that can be removed with the above methods.

For non-peelable papers, lots of scoring the face with a knife will allow penetration. An adjustable wallpaper knife should be set to just a tiny amount of blade sticking out so as to avoid plaster damage. to do this requires a fully adjustable tightening knob type of knife, not a sliding ratchet one.

Textured Papers

If a textured paper is proving hard going, it is sometimes possible to slice off the high points on the paper with a sharp bladed scraper. Doing this creates lots of water access holes and enables water penetration.
