Does this actually work?
Most fans I have seen have shaded pole motors which would require either thrysistor control of a combination of voltage and frequency changes to adjust speed.

Most modern ceiling fans with inbuilt speed control use series caps to control speed. They typically use motors with wound rotor & high R solid rotors, which enables them to run with high slip. Thus at reduced speed the mag field still runs at the same speed, but with lower current and lots of slip. Its inefficient, but cheap and the standard method. This is one reason why LV brush motor fans are much more efficient. NT 09:25, 13 August 2007 (BST)
